Cycling on the Danube from Passau to Vienna

Your journey begins in the charming city of Passau, known as the city of three rivers. If you arrive early, take the opportunity to explore the city's famous cathedral, home to the world's largest church organ. In the evening, you'll receive your bikes and a personal welcome briefing.

Leave Passau behind and cycle into Austria, immersing yourself in the stunning river landscapes of Central Europe. You'll pass by the only Trappist monastery in Austria at Engelhartszell and continue to the famous Schlögener Loop, where the Danube makes a spectacular U-turn around a granite mountain.

The journey continues downstream, where the valley narrows and takes on a wilder appearance. You'll pass the beautiful Ottensheim Castle, one of the oldest places in Austria, before reaching the historic Cistercian Abbey at Wilhering. The day ends in Linz, where you can explore the old town starting from the central Hauptplatz.

Today's route takes you away from the Danube, via the Augustinian abbey of St Florian, to Enns, the oldest town in Austria. Back along the Danube, you'll reach the beautiful baroque town of Grein, where you can visit the oldest municipal theatre in Austria, the maritime museum, or Greinburg Castle.

Cycle through the fascinating landscape of tall and densely wooded rock formations on both sides of the Danube. The journey takes you through quiet riverside towns, with numerous examples of castles that were positioned to exert power over the area. The day ends with a visit to the stunning Benedictine abbey at Melk.

Ride through the magnificent Wachau terraced vineyards, one of Austria's best-known wine-growing regions. The route winds between the pretty villages of Spitz, Weisenkirchen, and Durnstein, where you can visit a spectacular monastery and the ruins of a castle where King Richard the Lionheart was held for ransom. The day ends in the 1000-year-old town of Krems, where you can enjoy a wine tasting.

Start the day with a train ride from Krems to Tulln, then ride past Greifenstein and Klosterneuburg. You'll pass many castles, including the Kreuzenstein Castle in Korneuburg. Arriving into Vienna, enjoy a cup of coffee and a piece of typical Viennese cake, 'Sachertorte', in one of the numerous coffee houses. In the evening, take a stroll around Stephansplatz or walk along the famous shopping street Mariahilfer Strausse.

Spend your final day exploring the vibrant city of Vienna. Visit the grand Schonbrunn Palace, the Sigmund Freud Museum, and take a tour of the Vienna State Opera House. Don't forget to visit one of the city's many coffee shops to enjoy the typical Viennese cake, Sachertorte.
