Spend the day exploring east Iceland. Start with a visit to Hallormsstaður Forest, the largest forest in Iceland, perfect for light hiking. Travel along Lake Lagarfljót, and try to spot the mythical worm-like creature said to live in the lake. Hike up to Hengifoss, a waterfall falling over a striated rock. If you're up for more hiking, head to Laugarfell for an 8km hike around the waterfall circle. There's also an outdoor hot tub at Laugarfell for a relaxing dip. Spend the night in Egilsstaðir.

Start the day driving along the east fjords of Iceland, keeping a lookout for wild reindeer. During the summer, take a detour to Borgarfjörðarhöfn to visit the natural habitat of the puffins. Visit the interesting Eggin í Gleðivík, where giant sculptures of all the different kinds of eggs of resident birds of Iceland line the coast.
