Your adventure begins at Piano Provenzana, a quieter area on Etna’s northern slope, where you’ll meet your licensed volcano guide and receive all necessary trekking equipment.
After a short briefing and a chance to grab a coffee, you’ll board a 4x4 vehicle for a scenic ride up to 2,825 meters. Along the way, take in sweeping views of Sicily’s dramatic volcanic landscapes, including forests, ancient lava flows, and distant Mediterranean vistas.
From the drop-off point, the real ascent begins. Hike through volcanic scoria and past lava bombs as you climb 500 meters to the rim of the Central Crater at 3,380 meters. Your guide will select the safest route, adapting to volcanic activity and weather conditions for your safety.
At the summit, pause to marvel at the active craters and panoramic views stretching across Sicily and the surrounding seas. The descent, a demanding 7-kilometer trek down to 1,800 meters, takes you through soft volcanic sands and rugged gullies, offering a true test for seasoned hikers.
