Our guide Luigi was excellent. There were many memorable moments but want stood out for me was when the families needed to be evacuated because of the crowded living conditions. It made me sad but then I felt hopeful that people could come back to the area to have a free lease and build a business. The history of the origins of Matera and the cistern system are a marvel. So happy I came to visit Matera!

Giuseppe, our guide was very considerate of the fact that I was 3 months post op of a full knee replacement. However, we did manage to cover the full experience. We went up steep paths and down rocky stairs. He was totally knowledgeable of the history of the Sassi and pointed out areas of interest we had missed on our initial wander around. I loved the fact that the old tombs above the Santa Lucia church were carved into rock but had been relocated. We stayed in a cave room which was lovely and cool but felt a little damp. The plumbing was modern and our hotel had the history in pictures of the family which originally lived there. Matera has a cave set up to display how the people lived there with their animals. So very worth a visit.

This was an excellent tour. The tour guide was
very knowledgeable and gave us a lot of interesting information. The beginning of the tour was a bit disorganized, no fault of the guide. I only wish the tour guide had a headset because it was hard to hear at times.
