Sicily: Highlights

Today, we will journey to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Syracuse, once the most powerful ancient city-state in the Mediterranean. We will explore the old town island of Ortigia, the heart of Syracuse, and marvel at the well-preserved ancient Greek theater. We will also visit the Natività di Maria Santissima Cathedral, a stunning architectural blend of ancient, Byzantine, Norman, and Sicilian Baroque styles.

Our adventure continues with a visit to Mount Etna, Europe's highest active volcano. We will ascend to an altitude of 1,900 meters, passing through lush chestnut forests and vibrant lemon groves. After learning about the volcano, we will visit a local beekeeper and sample regional products like honey, olives, bread, and wine. Our day concludes with a visit to the ancient town of Taormina, where we will explore the famous Teatro Greco and the charming old town.

We start the day with a stroll through Catania, visiting the Cathedral Square and the Elephant Fountain. You may also sample local delicacies at the fish market. Later, we will visit the ancient Villa Romana del Casale in the heart of Sicily, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its well-preserved floor mosaics. We will then proceed to Agrigento for an overnight stay.

Today, we will explore the grand Temple Valley of Agrigento, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that houses the archaeological remains of the ancient city of Akragas. After the sightseeing tour, we will continue our journey to Palermo, where we will stay for the next five nights.

Our day begins with an excursion to Monreale, a small town known for its impressive Norman cathedral adorned with golden mosaics. After exploring the cathedral, we will return to Palermo for a light lunch of typical Sicilian finger food. In the afternoon, we will embark on a discovery tour of Palermo, visiting its magnificent palaces, impressive monuments, and bustling local markets.

Today, we will visit the idyllic town of Erice, perched 751 meters above sea level and offering a unique view over the west coast of Sicily. We will explore its narrow streets, archways, and beautiful courtyards. Later, we will drive to Trapani, a city with a rich history of naval battles between the Carthaginians and the Romans.

We will revisit Monreale today, delving deeper into its Romanesque, Arabic, and Byzantine art. After a light lunch in Palermo, we will continue our exploration of the city, visiting its magnificent palaces, impressive monuments, and vibrant markets.

Today, you have the option to join an excursion to Corleone, where you will learn about the history of the Mafia. Alternatively, you can enjoy a leisurely day in Palermo. If you choose the excursion, we will also visit the enclave of Piana degli Albanesi, a community with strong Albanian roots, and the memorial at Portella della Ginestra, commemorating the victims of the 1947 massacre.
