Small-Group Aurora Borealis Tour from Tromso with Professional Photos

What an amazing night! Tomás was our outgoing and dedicated tour guide extraordinaire who navigated the night skies with ease (and a personally crafted soundtrack which added the perfect flair of drama to an already magical evening). We traveled in a small group comprised of two couples and two singles who did not know one another and Tomás ensured an interactive, educational drive that brought everyone out of their shells and created an easy going and friendly team. He very adeptly catered to individual skill and comfort levels while keeping the overall momentum of the tour on track. His knowledge of the terrain, familiarity with the aurora and weather patterns, and passionate dedication allowed our group the mesmerizing and moving moments created by the undulating spectrum of the Aurora Borealis. 10/10 would highly recommend!! We had the most amazing tour with Wandering Owl. It was myself and my partners' first time in Tromso and we did this tour on our second night of our visit. Both our driver and the guide made the trip what it was. Mia was our tour guide and was so knowledgable and passionate about her subject that she made the whole experience unforgettable. The forecast in Tromso that evening was very cloudy and rainy so I didn't have great hopes for seeing the lights themselves, but I couldn't have been more wrong. We settled down in an open field near the border with Finland and after a while saw some incredible lights! It never felt too cold either since we had a campfire and were offered soup (which was homemade) and hot drinks to keep us cosy. Thank you so much to Wandering Owl, we loved it!!

awesome experience if you are willing to take the chance there wont be much to see with the naked eye

Grateful to have done our tour with Lucas & Adam from Wandering Owl. Even though the northern lights sighting was faint on the day due to cloudy skies, they still made sure that we had a memorable experience. Lucas was friendly, engaging & knowledgable. He captured some beautiful photos from the evening.

2 of us booked the "Adults Only Aurora Hunt With Citizen Science" with Wandering Owl because we wanted a smaller group and appreciated the environmental awareness of the company. Our guide Tomas was GREAT ... very informative and enthusiastic, but not over the top. Felt very safe being driven by him to the viewing site. We were fortunate that we had clear skis and only had to drive about an hour to the site he chose, which was truly perfect. He was absolutely in tune with the group dynamics of the 4 pairs of people he was guiding and managed the personalities/moods flawlessly. If I could change one thing about my tour - something that's on me, not Wandering Owl - I would have brought a tripod to mount my iPhone to. I got great photos, but learned when I used another tour company the next night which included use of a tripod that it was *much* easier to capture photos and they came out 20% better, despite the fact I'd literally hold my breath to stay as still as possible for the 10-second exposure. Temp was probably 10-20 degrees F; I'm used to a winter climate and dressed warmly enough that I didn't need to use the thermal suit, but I definitely could not have taken as many photos as I did without having charcoal heater packs in my mittens and boots (I'd brought my own). A luxury item would have been some kind of photography glove/mitten. Thanks, Wandering Owl! I'll be recommending you to anyone I meet who travels to Tromso!

Such an amazing experience and professional tour - the absolute highlight of our trip!

We’d been in Tromsø for around 5 days in mid-February before going on our tour with Wandering Owl - and despite trying to track the Northern Lights amateurishly every evening (even waking up at 3.30am some nights to try and catch a glimpse!) we had no luck throughout, with all of our hopes of seeing them resting on this!

We began our tour with Isaac in a snowy/cloudy evening in the city centre and after a short toilet break, the guides decided that our best opportunity for clear skies would be to drive to Finland! Throughout the journey, Isaac’s attentiveness was fantastic - explaining the science behind the northern lights, rationale for the decision to go to Finland and the data most pivotal to increase your chances (wish I knew this before hiking up into the darkness of the City at 4am with various Free apps haha)!

We arrived in Finland and set up camp on a nearby frozen lake; where the group were given soup (which was great) and began to chat around a campfire, which gave the tour a really nice personal touch. Shortly after setting up, we caught a glimpse of what turned out to be the most amazing northern lights show for 2 hours!

Isaac was simply Epic - we will have to hold him to the coffee that he was in the middle of preparing when the skies exploded with the aurora! It was genuinely great to have a host who seemed just as excited as we were about seeing them.

All professional photography was shared the very next day which captured the magical nature of the evening. My recommendation is that, if you are considering using this tour - absolutely go for it! Do not chance your arm with a cheaper operator, as without this group’s expertise/attentive nature, our trip would not have been nearly as special. Thanks again Isaac and Wandering Owl!

Tomas and Iliyan were such wonderful hosts on our northern lights tour, from Iliyan’s world class driving to Tomas’ wonderful facts and stories they made the whole experience marvellous. We had lots of cloud coverage around Tromso so we ended up driving to the Finnish/swedish border to a frozen lake - Tomas was so on it when making snap decisions to ensure we got the best experience possible. The diligence of the two men meant that everyone in the group was able to go home with some stunning photos. Really enjoyed lying underneath the stars in our snowsuits and the spiced soup and homemade biscuits were particular winners! A massive thank you to both hosts who really should be commended for their patience and knowledge - they worked as a wonderful team. Also special shout out to Tomas’ playlist which had everything from traditional Sami songs, to all the songs ever made about stars to some of our favourite soothing classical songs for the long drive back to Tromso.

Our Aurora Hunt was truly unforgettable! Our guide Lukas was knowledgeable, fun, friendly, and took us to the best spots for witnessing the breathtaking Northern Lights. The entire experience was well-organized, with warm drinks, cozy gear, and plenty of time to enjoy the spectacle. Seeing the sky come alive was mesmerizing, and the small group setting made it even more special. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a magical and authentic Aurora experience! 🌌✨

We did 2 nights with Wandering Owls. We had really different experiences for the 2 nights because of the weather. Our night with Isaac was excellent! We found an amazing spot and watched the lights all night! It was a truly beautiful night! Thank you for the awesome pictures too. Both nights we had Adam as a driver and he was extraordinary as well.

The only thing that could be improved is the restroom break at the convenience store is such a waste of time. Can you guys not find different stops so we don't have such a long line?
