After breakfast, embark on a panoramic city tour of Sofia. Then, we'll head to the Troyan Monastery, the third largest in Bulgaria. Next, we'll proceed to Veliko Turnovo, the medieval capital of Bulgaria, beautifully situated on four hills above the Yantra river. Here, we'll tour the city, including the Tsarevets Royal Hill and its fortress. After a day of exploration, check into your hotel in Veliko Turnovo for a well-deserved rest.

Today is dedicated to the region of Ruse. Our first stop will be the UNESCO-listed Rock-hewn churches of Ivanovo, dating back to the mid 13th century. We'll then proceed to Ruse, the largest Bulgarian town on the Danube, where you'll have some free time for lunch and a walking tour, including a visit to the underground Holy Trinity Cathedral. In the afternoon, we'll visit another rock monastery, the Monastery of Saint Dimitar Basarbovski, the only functioning rock monastery in Bulgaria. We'll return to Veliko Turnovo in the early evening for a second night at your hotel.

Today, we'll visit three of the most famous monasteries in the Veliko Turnovo region: the Transfiguration, Liaskovski, and Kilifarevski Monasteries. These colourful, picturesquely located monasteries are steeped in legends of Bulgarian kings and queens, masters of murals and woodcarving, and the history of Bulgaria's fight for independence and cultural identity. In the late afternoon, we'll head deep into the Balkan mountains to the museum town of Tryavna, a main centre of woodcarving and icon-painting. After a visit to the old town, you'll check into your hotel for the night.

Day 5 – Day 5: Tryavna to Plovdiv via Sokolski Monastery and Shipka

In the morning, we'll visit the Sokolski Monastery, built during the Bulgarian National Revival and declared a historic site in 1973. Our tour will continue with a short stop at the Shipka Mountain Pass, the highest and most picturesque part of the mountain, and the Shipka Memorial Church. We'll then head to the heart of the Valley of Roses, also known as the Valley of the Thracian Kings. In the afternoon, we'll arrive in Plovdiv, the second largest Bulgarian city and once the capital of Philip the 2nd of Macedonia. Here, we'll take a walking tour of the Old Plovdiv Architecture Reserve, including the Ancient Amphitheatre and St. Constantine and Helena Church. Overnight in Plovdiv.
