E-BIKES
A limited number of E-Bikes are available on board. These must be prebooked. If you have booked an E-Bike you will receive a high-quality pedelec, powered mainly by a Bosch motor capable of covering long distances, and characterized by their light weight and great components. Alternative drive systems may also be used. Standard components of our e-bikes in varying frame sizes include, 28 inch hollow chamber rims with puncture-proof touring tires, high-quality derailleur gears and break systems, a carrier and a sturdy bike stand, touring saddle as well as mudguards and a pannier rack. With our e-bikes you will conquer the hills with a smile, they are a true declaration of independence for all who wish to cycle and seek the support of a little push. We offer a trapeze frame for all guests up to 179 cm, and a diamond frame for people 180 cm+.
MOUNTAIN BIKE
A mountain bike (MTB) option is available on select departures running parallel with the standard itinerary, refer to the mountain bike itinerary - a supplement applies. It is not possible to carry a pannier on the MTB rentals, you will need to bring your own hydration pack or water bladder to store drinking water needed during the cycling.
Our rental bikes are equipped with flat pedals. Should you not want to be without your own click pedals (or own saddle – without the seat post), please bring them with you and let your tour guide attach them to your rental bike.
BRINGING YOUR OWN BIKE
We actively discourage you from bringing your own bicycles because the transport from your hometown to Croatia by airplane is both costly and risky. Bikes often get damaged during the transport and taxis are often unwilling to transport bicycle boxes. In addition to the above mentioned it is very difficult to store the boxes on the boat during the week. If you still want to bring your own bicycle, please keep in mind that a bicycle with a gearshift (at least 21 gears) in a sound technical condition is required for this tour because the area is mostly hilly to mountainous. If you decide to bring your own bicycle you should double-check the condition of your brakes, tyres and chains before the trip and put together an appropriate repair kit with spare parts (such as an extra tire tube). Exclusion of liability: Radurlaub Zeitreisen GmbH cannot be held liable for any damage that might be caused to your bicycle/e-bike during loading, unloading or transfer.
** We do not allow private e-bikes on board of our boats. This decision has been made due to health and safety regulations. If you wish to ride an e-bike for the duration of your tour, pleaseget in touch with us about the rental options.
We do not recommend bringing along private road bikes, as the thin tires are not suitable for some of the road surfaces encountered on this tour.
BICYCLE INSURANCE
We are offering a bicycle insurance against theft and damage for our Islandhopping bicycles (not insured: grossly negligent damages). Bike Insurance should be prebooked and on arrival paid in cash locally. EUR10 per person for hybrid bike, EUR20 per person for electric bike. Please note that normal travel insurance often does not cover loss or damage to rental bikes. If you do not take out bike insurance you will need to pay for the cost of the bike or repair of damages.
Kindly take care of your rental bicycle/bike. Park it at safe places - not next to the sea to keep it away from salt water. Please keep in mind that you are responsible to compensate for any damage caused.
PANNIERS
For the duration of the tour we supply you with a waterproof pannier by Ortlieb, a practical way of carrying drinks, bathing gear, camera etc. The use of our Islandhopping panniers is free of charge. To ensure that bike panniers remain water proof they have to be closed tight. Although panniers are manufactured from waterproof material Radurlaub Zeitreisen GmbH cannot be held liable for any damage that might be caused to any personal belongings like mobile phones, cameras etc. The use of rucksacks (except for hydration packs) is in our opinion less practical than handlebar bags or panniers. The later are more easily accessible. If necessary we supply you with a waterproof pannier by Ortlieb a practical way of carrying drinks, bathing gear, camera etc.
HELMETS
On all bicycle tours it is mandatory to wear a helmet. In order to guarantee optimum protection we request that you bring your own well fitted helmet and - for your own safety - wear it on all bike tours. Bike helmets can be provided free of charge if reserved prior to arrival (limited amount).
Cycle Clothes Advice
You do not really need a special sports outfit for our cycle tours. Normal recreation clothes are quite sufficient. However, for our cycling tours most of our guests prefer wearing special cycling clothes made of synthetics that do not absorb but wick away sweat. Thus the clothes always feel dry which prevents the body from cooling off too quickly. Bicycle jerseys are usually cut longer in the back so that the bent-over rump is covered completely. They should be made of high-quality material closely lag the body and not flutter when riding at high speed. Wearing padded cycling pants prevents pressure discomfort and soreness. The cut of the crotch of men’s and women’s cycling pants differs considerably. Well-fitting cycling pants should be elastic, have an elastic waistband and should never pinch or constrict at the top and at the crotch or the legs. Paying attention to good quality, the right material, a good fit and sufficient freedom of movement assure that your cycling apparel - and with it cycling itself - will remain a long-lasting pleasure. Cycling apparel can be purchased at any cycling store where you can try on the clothes on the spot. You can also order from suppliers on the internet.
Helmet Advice
When buying a bicycle helmet we recommend getting advice at a specialist store since finding the optimum helmet depends on quite a number of things. Avoid at all cost buying a helmet because of its looks; the main criteria should be a perfect fit.
Gloves
Cycling gloves offer good protection against injuries (mainly abrasions). They improve your grip control and also help to avoid numbness in your hands which happens frequently on long tours. Like the helmets they are sold by numerous suppliers. When buying cycling gloves for the first time you should get advice at a specialist shop because cycling gloves should have optimum fit too and be suited to the intended purpose.
Handlebar bag
Bags attaching to the handlebars are a very useful accessory because they allow easy and direct access to important items such as camera or raingear. Handlebar bags are available from many suppliers in different sizes and with various attachment systems. The well-tried Klick-Fix principle is the most common. A good handlebar bag should definitely be water-proof and have a solid, easy to use attachment mechanism. It should never be too large since heavy handlebar bags influence the steering behaviour of the bike. A transparent map compartment at the top is very useful. Should you bring a handlebar bag with you, please keep in mind that our bicycles do not have a Klick-Fix attachment, so you need to bring the necessary adapters.
