Our guide Clare was amazing. Her knowledge of art was truly enlightening. We learned so much about Van Gogh the man, as well as his art. For sure my husband Don and I are smarter because of her. I highly recommend this tour as there is so much to learn and enjoy at the Van Gogh; having an experienced guide with you brings your experience to a whole other level!

My tour guide was Frank. It turns out I am the only person doing the tour. It is low tourist season, so I suspect this plays a significant reason for the low number.
One of the first questions I ask tour guides is how long they have been doing this job, what other types of tours they do? Frank tells me this is his 25th year.
The meeting spot location’s written directions of where the coffee shop to meet is near perfect. I say near, because I never saw the toilets location written in the directions. But that was a non starter given that this particular name coffee shop is the only one between the Van Museum and the Rijksmuseum.
Frank and I proceed to the museum. With my not having mobility issues, it takes us less than five minutes to walk to it. With it being low tourist season, and us having a 9:30 entrance time we enter the museum in short order.
My knowledge of Van Gogh is along the line of successfully answering a few basic Trivial Pursuit questions. I let Frank know this upfront, but also did want to learn more about the man, his painting methods, and motivations. Frank delivers on this, and more.
Something Frank does that I appreciate is that he does not drone on and on when it comes to speaking. Rather he ask guiding questions where even if your knowledge of art is as blank as a canvas can be you still are able to respond in a way where you are not left feeling unintelligent.
This is done by him first often explaining an aspect of whatever in somewhat details, and doing a follow-up question. My response to what he is hoping I can is as simple as noticing that Van Gogh did many, many self portraits of himself. With Frank then adding the reason this was so was due to x, y and z.
With it just being the two of us, Frank and I are able to engage in dialogue about the pieces he has identified to show me, as well as sometimes entertaining my questions about something I see that he didn’t intend to show me.
As I mentioned earlier, my knowledge about Van Gogh is very limited. However, after taking this tour with Frank, I will be ordering the book of letters that Van Gogh’s sister-in-law played in getting published that started resurgence of Van Gogh’s work 20 years after his death. I would not be doing this if Frank’s command knowledge of the man and his works had not across so strongly to me.
