All breakfasts and four dinners are included.

A typical hotel breakfast consists of toast/bread with jam or honey, cereal, cheese and ham, served with coffee, tea, milk, orange juice, fruit, cake and yoghurt. Lunches are normally arranged as picnics or taken in small cafes along the route. Four dinners are included on this trip and they normally consist of a three-course menu with a choice of regional specialities. Vegetarians and people with special dietary requirements can be catered for but please inform us prior to travel.

Transfers to and from the airport will be by private vehicle (normally minibus). On Day 7, we take a train from Paestum to Salerno. While cycling, the vehicle will carry your baggage and be on hand with assistance or if you choose to sit out a section of the ride. A guide cycles with the group.

We spend six nights in different three- and four-star hotels and one night in a traditional agriturismo – a beautifully converted farmhouse in Cilento National Park. The hotels have been chosen for their warm hospitality and their typical Italian character. Some have a swimming pool or beach nearby, which will be greatly appreciated in summer. Most of the hotels have restaurants serving typical regional cuisine and delicious local produce.

Our journey begins in the historic coastal city of Monopoli. Depending on your arrival time, you may enjoy a leisurely walk through the town’s narrow alleys and along the Adriatic shore. We highly recommend arriving a day or two early to explore other regional highlights, such as the UNESCO-listed town of Alberobello, famous for its trulli, or Ostuni, known as the White City for its whitewashed old town. Today we cycle from the coast to the fascinating city of Matera. A warm-up climb takes us onto a rolling plateau, passing through fennel fields and ancient olive groves. We stop in several Apulian villages for coffee or rest. Crossing into the Basilicata region, we cycle partly along the ancient Appian Way. We reach the UNESCO-listed town of Matera in the afternoon, with time to explore the Sassi district and enjoy an aperitivo in one of the beautiful squares.

Our longest ride starts with a downhill journey towards the Lake of St Giuliano. Following an old road along a ridge, we pass historic villages, including Tricarico, before reaching the Lucan Dolomites. A challenging climb brings us to Castelmezzano, a beautiful village set in a breathtaking location. A short walk through the village and up to the Norman steps is a must before dinner at the hotel restaurant. Overnight in Castelmezzano.

We head west into the Campania region, crossing the National Park of the Basilicata Apennines. After a challenging climb, we reach the ridge between Basilicata and Campania, then cycle down into the Vallo di Diano, a fertile high plain with beautiful medieval towns. We settle into Padula, a charming village.

Today’s ride is relatively short, allowing time for sightseeing. We cycle down to Padula and visit the Padula Charterhouse, the largest monastery in Italy. Afterward, we cycle into Cilento National Park, climbing up the Sentinella pass and descending into the park. We settle into our agriturismo with a pool, enjoy lunch, and relax or take an optional ride to the ghost town of Roscigno. Dinner features local specialties prepared with organic produce.

We ride in the shadow of the Alburni Mountains towards the Tyrrhenian Sea. Early in the afternoon, we arrive at the well-preserved Greek temples of Paestum. We start with an early train ride to Salerno, then cycle along the stunning Amalfi Coast. After a short climb to Vietri, we follow the coastal route to Cetara and continue uphill to Capo d’Orso for dramatic views. We then head towards Amalfi for a short stop and stroll. In the afternoon, we ride past Positano and descend to Sorrento. Celebrate with a drink at the beach and a swim in the Bay of Naples. Optional evening meal together.
