Mdina and Rabat is a 'must visit' of the historic attractions in Malta. The small, walled city of Mdina is calm and uncommercialised and unlike anywhere I have visited before.
Our tour group was small (9) and, Christian, our guide, was knowlegeable, personable and conducted the tour in a well organised, relaxed fashion.
Don't miss out on the tour around Rabat, which is easily done unless it's pointed out.
Rabat is where the locals, rather than the gentry, live and the contrast was clear. Being a local, Christian was obviously well known and was able to point out and recommend places to eat.
Our tour had commenced at 3pm so we were in Mdina as the sun set, turning the buildings gold. The later start also meant that we were in Rabat at 6 o'clock when Yannis opened and we were fortunate to get a table for a delicious meal of traditional home-cooked fare.
Travel between Mdina and Valletta was easy by public service buses about a 35 minute trip and cost only 2 euros each way.

Our February trip commenced at 3pm, at which time there were few other visitors and we saw the setting sun turn the biuildings golden.
We had travelled by public bus from Valletta, which was easy, efficient and only 2 euros each way.
Our group was small, nine, and our guide, Christian, was very personable and knowlegeable and had an interesting and relaxed delivery with excellent english.
Mdina is definitely worth a visit; it is quiet, calm and not commercialised.
We were pleased that the tour included Rabat, which is the neighbourhood where the locals live and, where we stopped for a delicious evening meal at Yannis, before catching the public bus back to Valletta.

Many thanks for your review John. We do keep our groups small to a maximum of 12 people per group and have a local guide from Rabat showing our visitors his own town. Rabat also has the best restaurants of the island and is always a pleasure to have lunch or dinner there.

Our strength is in the fact that this tour is given by a local guide from Rabat. Hence, this is the best understanding you can get of these cities and their people. This goes beyond the normal tour and gets diving in a community which you will understand better by the end of the tour and you will also have contributed to its betterment with parts of our proceeds from this tour going to the volontary organisations of Rabat. This was an excellent tour. Our guide Chris was a local and his welcoming and friendly nature was matched only by his obvious passion for his home town and country. Mdina was fascinating insight into the old city and the centre of life before the knights arrived and set up Valletta. And Rabat was just as interesting but less ‘monumental’ and more ‘human’. We recommend his tour highly.

I get asked a lot whether we will be doing any museums or coffee stops in the tour. The tour is about the place, it's people and the centuries of layers of history intertwining into each other told by a local. Think of it as a show of sorts. So I would suggest you do any museums before the tour itself which you can all do on your own, dedicate your time inthe tour to enjoy our 'show' and then stay for dinner in the many good restaurants or cafes we show you throughout. This tour was fantastic. Christian was the perfect tour guide. A true native of Rabat who was told the story of Mdina in such an effortless way. We only wish we could take more tours with him as our guide. We took this tour on our first day in Malta and it felt like such a friendly welcome to the country. He made such an effort to connect with all of the members of the tour, even our 12 and 14 year olds. Special guy!
