My husband and I just returned from an amazing trip to the Basque Country. The destination is unique in the world, and the food and wine alone make the trip worth taking.
We had a special interest in visiting the Rioja wine region after hearing about the world class wines that have been produced there for almost a thousand years!
Gratefully our research connected us with Zach and Irene, the owners of The Best of Basque luxury tour company. Their in-depth local knowledge and connections with the best and most unique wineries made for a really exceptional experience. With over 600 wineries in the region, you couldn't possibly do this on your own.
We were picked up at the hotel in one of their spotless luxury vans and spent the next several hours being immersed in the beauty and history of Basque Country.
After visiting three extraordinary wineries with personal tours and tastings, we were ready for lunch. Zach brought us to an excellent local restaurant where we experienced Basque cuisine, some of the best food in the world. We invited Zach to join us and thankfully he obliged. His passion for the food and ability to speak Spanish resulted in an unbelievable meal.

This was a memorable experience for my wife and me, experiencing a wine region new to us. Our guide Zach really knew his Spanish, Basque and wine history and was fun to talk to. The three bodegas we visited were all very welcoming with friendly, informative hosts and incredible wines. We would love to do it again soon.

We had a wonderful time on our private tour of three premium Rioja wineries, led by Zach. Communication and information throughout the whole booking process and the day itself was great. The transfer from and back to where we were staying in Bilbao was very comfortable, with beautiful scenery. We had multiple delicious wines with local snacks at each of the wineries, with a full winery tour at one which was fantastic. Zach kindly also booked us somewhere for lunch in LaGuardia (at our request) where we had some delicious local food and more wine! Would highly recommend this tour for anyone wanting to visit some wineries in the area!

The wine tour of Rioja was amazing. We did it as a group of 6 (thank you to Craig/Joanne from Canada and Bjorn/Jane from Norway for their great company on the trip).
Irene was a fantastic guide - full of fun and enthusiasm. She gave us so much useful information about Bilbao and the Basque region.
We visited 3 wineries and enjoyed tasting so many different wines - each of the hosts was interesting and engaging. Along the way we stopped for many great photo opportunities and to visit other places of interest.
We would recommend this tour for anyone visiting this area. It is a really great day out!

We had a fabulous day! Enjoyed the drive, the wineries, the wine and food! Especially enjoyed a surprise visit to a small town in Rioja. It is one of the most charming places we’ve seen on our trip. Had fun having lunch on one of the small streets. We ordered way too much wine and drank way too much wine… A little bit of sleeping went on on the drive back!

The drive to the Rioja Valley was well worth the trip. Once we arrived the weather was perfect and the tour started with a winery called Amerin. It was a full tour about the process of making their wines. The winery I enjoyed the most was from Valserrano. My husband and I enjoyed our tour guide Irene who was full of energy and very proud of being from Basque.

We had a fantastic trip with Jani, who was a super engaging and knowledgeable guide. She introduced us to the culture and history of the regions we passed through, and to passionate and talented winemakers at three smaller estates in Rioja Alavesa. Samples of both wine and the accompanying food were generous and delicious, and we picked up a few bottles at each place.
