Take a morning ferry to São Jorge Island. Hike from a plateau down into the valley to Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo, a sleepy nest without road or electricity connections. Continue along the north coast to a fantastic lagoon, a valuable wetland biotope with numerous birds and frogs. Spend the remaining time in the idyllic harbor town of Velas before taking the ferry back to Pico.

After breakfast, take a ferry to Faial Island. Visit Capelinhos, where the bizarre lunar landscape is a reminder of the volcanic eruption of 1957/58. Spend the next two nights on Faial.
