Gravel Explorer: Cycling the Azores

This afternoon, we gather in Povoaçao, the island's first settlement, for your bike fitting and a test ride. Take a leisurely stroll through the charming old town or visit the black sand beach, offering stunning views of the bay framed by towering cliffs.

Today, we cycle from the sea up to the Furnas Caldera, a geothermal wonderland filled with bubbling hot water pools, towering steam columns, popping mud pools, and sparkling springs. Ride around the lagoon and visit the famous cooking pits where locals prepare the traditional 'Cozido das Furnas,' a dish cooked in volcanic ground.

Depart Povoaçao via the scenic Alameda dos Platanos country roads, lined with orange bark plantains and vibrant hydrangeas. Ascend the basaltic slopes of Pico De Vara on the Tronqueira road, a gravel path through dense forests of endemic laurel, ilex, heather trees, and towering cypress, leading to the town of Nordeste.

Pedal through lush landscapes to the island's westernmost caldera, a complex of craters and cones. Cycle along the crater rim for breathtaking views of crater lakes and volcanoes before descending to admire two adjacent lakes of different colors. Shuttle into Ponta Delgada for a farewell dinner.

After breakfast, the tour concludes. Spend additional time in Ponta Delgada, explore more thermal hot springs, embark on a whale watching tour, or discover more of the Azores archipelago if time permits.
