5-Day York, the Dales, Lake District & Hadrian's Wall Small-Group Tour from Edinburgh Including Admissions

We begin our journey in the bustling city of Edinburgh, heading towards the East Lothian coastline. Our first stop is the fortified town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, where we'll admire its impressive walls. Next, we visit the grand Bamburgh Castle, a seaside fortress with over 1400 years of history. We then travel the Great North Road, once trodden by Roman legions, to reach the city of York, our base for the next two nights.

Day two offers a choice of activities. You can delve into the rich history of York, visiting its chocolate museum, ancient walls, and Viking heritage. Alternatively, join a half-day excursion to the stunning North York Moors National Park. We'll also visit the bustling port of Whitby, famous for inspiring Bram Stoker's Dracula, and the quaint fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay, steeped in smugglers' tales. We return to York for the evening.

On day three, we venture into the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, a haven for wildlife and a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. We journey through the Northern Dales, the hub of the Dales cattle trade, before ascending into the remote hills. Our day ends in the lively market town of Keswick, where you'll have free time to explore.

Day four is dedicated to the Lake District. We start with a visit to the enigmatic Castlerigg standing stones, then head to Ullswater, considered England's most beautiful lake. After a forest walk to the Aira Force waterfall, we traverse the Kirkstone Pass to reach Lake Windermere. Here, you can opt for a leisurely cruise or a lakeside lunch. We then visit the picturesque village of Hawkshead and the tranquil Grasmere, before returning to Keswick.

On the final day, we leave the lakes behind and ascend Hartside Pass for panoramic views. We stop at Hadrian’s Wall, a testament to Roman engineering, before following the ancient Dere Street into Scotland. We pause in Jedburgh for refreshments by the abbey ruins, then visit Scott’s View for stunning vistas over the River Tweed and the Cheviot Hills. Our journey concludes in Edinburgh.
