All Intrepid group trips in Europe are accompanied by one of our local European group leaders. ’Local’ in this context means a leader who is European or lives in Europe. The aim of the group leader is to take the hassle out of your travels and to help you have the best trip possible. Intrepid endeavours to provide the services of an experienced leader however, due to the seasonality of travel, rare situations may arise where your leader is new to a particular region or training other group leaders. Your leader takes care of logistics, will provide information on the places you are travelling through, offer suggestions for things to do and see, recommend great local eating venues and introduce you to our local friends. While not being guides in the traditional sense you can expect them to have a broad general knowledge of the places visited on the trip, including historical, cultural, religious and social aspects.
At Intrepid we also aim to support local guides in the individual cities or locations we travel to. If you are interested in delving deeper into the local culture at a specific site or location then your leader can recommend an optional local guide service in most of the main destinations of your trip.

OCCASIONAL ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATION:
The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline. On rare occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our usual accommodation. A similar standard of accommodation will be used in these instances.
TWIN SHARE BASIS:
Accommodation on this trip is on a twin/multishare basis. We pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. Please note there may be times where facilities will be shared rather than ensuite and rare occasions when you share a room with passengers travelling on different Intrepid trips than your own.
CHECK-IN TIME:
Throughout the trip we request that our hotels prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we're arriving prior to normal check-in time. However this isn't always possible which means we won't be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination.
PRE/POST TRIP ACCOMMODATION:
If you've purchased pre-trip or post-trip accommodation (if available), you may be required to change rooms from your trip accommodation for these extra nights.
FACILITIES:
Your accommodation may not always have private en suite facilities or air-conditioning. European hotels generally don't provide kettles or fridges.

Begin your adventure in the historic city of Carlisle, where you'll meet your fellow travelers and tour leader. After a brief introduction, embark on a scenic walk along the River Eden, passing by the ancient Carlisle Castle and the Tullie Museum. As you follow the path of Hadrian's Wall, you'll traverse through picturesque fields and bridleways, arriving in the quaint village of Crosby-on-Eden. Continue your journey to Irthington before a short transfer takes you to the charming town of Haltwhistle, your home for the next three nights. Consider staying at a cozy local inn or a comfortable hotel like the Haltwhistle Hotel (or similar).
Day 2 – Day 2: Lanercost Priory to Gilsland

Start your day with a transfer to Lanercost Priory, a site of historical significance. From here, embark on a walk to Birdoswald Roman Fort, where you can explore the remnants of this ancient structure. This section of Hadrian's Wall offers breathtaking views over the River Irthing Gorge and is known for being one of the best-preserved stretches. After spending time at the fort, continue your journey to the village of Gilsland. Return to Haltwhistle for a restful evening at your accommodation, such as the Haltwhistle Hotel (or similar).

Begin your day with a visit to the Roman Army Museum, where you'll gain fascinating insights into the life of Roman soldiers through engaging displays and 3D films. Afterward, embark on a hike along the dramatic Whin Sill Ridge, a route that offers some of the most stunning views along Hadrian's Wall. The trail involves challenging ascents and descents, leading to the highest point on the wall. Conclude your day with a refreshing stop at the historic Twice Brewed Inn, where you can sample local brews. Return to Haltwhistle for another night at your chosen accommodation, such as the Haltwhistle Hotel (or similar).

Today, explore the remarkable Vindolanda, a key Roman military post, where you can view the famous Vindolanda Writing Tablets. Spend time discovering the site's rich history and the treasures housed in the on-site museum. Afterward, rejoin Hadrian's Wall at Steel Rigg for a challenging hike over Northumberland's rugged crags. Pause at the well-preserved Housesteads Roman Fort before concluding your walk at Sewing Shields, where you'll delve into Arthurian legends. A short transfer will take you to Hexham, where you can relax at a local hotel like the Beaumont Hotel (or similar).
Day 5 – Day 5: Chollerford to Port Gate

After breakfast, travel to Chollerford, where you can visit Chester's Roman Fort and Museum. Explore the well-preserved bathhouse and learn about the site's archaeological significance. Discover the history of the Heavenfield Battle Site, where St. Oswald's Church commemorates a famous victory. Your walk today will take you through the scenic countryside to Port Gate. Enjoy refreshments at the Errington Coffee House before returning to Hexham for another night at your accommodation, such as the Beaumont Hotel (or similar).

Today, visit the picturesque village of Corbridge, where you can explore ancient sites at your leisure. Consider visiting the Corbridge Roman Town and Museum, once a vital Roman hub in northern England. Spend your afternoon walking back to Hexham through the lush Tynedale countryside. Celebrate your final night with a group dinner at a local restaurant, reflecting on the memorable journey you've shared. Stay overnight at the Beaumont Hotel (or similar).

As your tour comes to an end, enjoy a leisurely morning in Hexham. With no scheduled activities, you are free to depart at your convenience. Hexham is conveniently located near Newcastle upon Tyne, offering easy access to rail and air connections for your onward journey.
