During the trip you will be accommodated in a combination of B&Bs and guesthouses. Please note that with all our night stops we aim to reserve rooms with ensuite facilities. In some circumstances ensuite rooms may not be available at the time of booking. Rooms generally do not have baths. The main reason being that they take up a lot of space, some hotels/guesthouses may have a separate room in the house where a bath is available to guests, but in the main it is showers.

Day 1 – Day 1: Newcastle to Whitley Bay
Day 1: Newcastle to Whitley Bay
Begin your journey in the vibrant city of Newcastle before heading to the coastal town of Whitley Bay. Here, you'll visit the historic St Mary's Island and its iconic lighthouse, where you'll enjoy spectacular coastal views. Your accommodation for the night is The Metropolitan, a stylish 4-star B&B (or similar).

Today, you'll take a short train ride to Wallsend, where you'll explore the award-winning Segedunum Roman Fort. From there, you'll follow the old Tyne to Blyth railway line, passing through Walker and Byker, before reaching downtown Newcastle. Here, you'll have the opportunity to visit the historic Newcastle Keep. Your journey continues to the quaint village of Wylam, where you'll spend the night in a charming Victorian country house (or similar).

Start your day with a scenic stroll to Heddon, where you'll find a well-preserved section of Hadrian's Wall. Follow the National Trail to the remains of Vindobala Fort and the reservoirs around Welton, a haven for birdlife. Your day ends in East Wallhouses, where you'll stay in a spacious stone-built farmhouse from 1735 (or similar), nestled in the beautiful Northumberland countryside.
Day 4 – Day 4: East Wallhouses to Chollerford

Continue your journey to Halton, where you can admire the old keep. As you approach Chollerford, you'll pass Heavenfields, the site of a historic battle in 633 AD. In Chollerford, you'll have the chance to explore the Roman bridge foundations by the River Tyne. Your accommodation for the night is The George Hotel (or similar), a cosy pub situated close to the river.

Today, you'll cross the Tyne over a beautiful stone bridge and visit the Chesters Roman Museum. As you continue your walk, you'll pass the Brocolita Roman Fortress and the Housesteads Fort, offering stunning views over the Northward Tynescape. Your day ends in Once Brewed, where you'll stay at the Twice Brewed Inn (or similar), just a stone's throw from the Wall.

The Wall climbs to its highest point over Winshields Crags, before descending to the delightfully named Bogle Hole. You'll pass by the ruins of Thirlwall Castle before crossing the Cumbria / Northumberland border at Gilsand, where you'll spend the night at Hollies on the Wall (or similar), a modern guesthouse.

Today, you'll have the chance to explore the Birdoswald Roman Site, home to the longest continuous remaining stretch of Hadrian's Wall. After crossing the River Irthing into Cumbria, you'll visit the Lanercost Priory before reaching Brampton, where you'll stay in a comfortable B&B or farmhouse (or similar).
Day 8 – Day 8: Brampton to Carlisle

The route continues through the picturesque countryside to the city of Carlisle. Here, you'll have the chance to explore the city's rich history, including the castle founded by Henry I and the Tullie House Museum, home to a fine collection of Roman remains. Your accommodation for the next two nights is the Abbey Court Guesthouse (or similar), a Victorian townhouse located in the city centre.
Day 9 – Day 9: Carlisle to Bowness On Solway
Day 9: Carlisle to Bowness On Solway
Today, you can choose to either walk to Bowness On Solway and then take a bus back to Carlisle, or take a morning bus to Bowness and walk back. The walk offers beautiful views of Skiddaw and High Pike to the south and across the Solway Firth to the west. You'll spend another night at the Abbey Court Guesthouse (or similar) in Carlisle.
