Walking in Madeira (New Year)

Today, we embark on a scenic walk starting from Santana, passing through lush agricultural lands and following a levada. Our journey takes us to Boca do Risco, offering breathtaking views. We continue along the cliff tops to Porto da Cruz, where we conclude our walk. On our return to Santana, we stop at a sugar cane factory and rum distillery for an optional tasting. Today's trek covers 12 kilometers and takes approximately 5 hours.

We start our day with a drive to Boaventura, a quaint hamlet. Our trail begins with a steep incline but soon levels out as we head towards the coast. We pass through the UNESCO-protected Laurel Forest and follow the Levada dos Tornos. Our journey ends in Porto Moniz, known for its volcanic rock pools. Enjoy the festive Christmas lights in Porto Moniz this evening. Today's trek covers 13 kilometers and takes around 5 hours.

Today's adventure begins in Rabaçal, where we follow the beautiful Levada do Alecrim. We reach the stunning Lagoa do Vento, perfect for a rest or a swim. After lunch at the House of Rabaçal, we continue along the Levada do Risco to a magnificent waterfall. Our journey concludes at the Tunel dos Cavaleiros, offering views of the Calheta valley and the sea. Tonight, enjoy a three-course dinner at your hotel and celebrate New Year's Eve with a spectacular fireworks display. Today's trek covers 12 kilometers and takes around 5 hours.

We drive to Lombada and begin our walk along the Levada Nova, offering views of the coastline and villages of Ribeira Brava. Our journey ends in Ribeira Brava, where we enjoy a refreshment before heading to Funchal. Our base for the next three nights is Hotel do Carmo (or similar), a 3-star hotel in the heart of Funchal. Today's trek covers 10 kilometers and takes around 4 hours.

Start your day with an optional guided orientation walk of Funchal or explore the old town at your own pace. Discover the cobbled lanes, vibrant restaurants, and art shops. Visit the Mercado dos Lavradores or a Madeiran embroidery workshop. In the afternoon, choose from a variety of activities: a half-day cruise to spot whales and dolphins, a stroll through the botanic gardens, tea at Reids Palace Hotel, or a cable car ride to Monte.

Our final walk starts at Pico Arieiro, ascending to Pico Ruivo, Madeira's highest peak. The trail includes the famous Balcony Walk and several tunnels. This challenging hike offers stunning views and ends at Achada de Texeira. Return to Funchal for a relaxing evening, perhaps dining on the harborfront or in the old town.
