History of Park Güell
Park Güell, one of Barcelona's most famous landmarks, was originally intended to be a housing estate for the wealthy. Commissioned by Eusebi Güell, Antoni Gaudí started designing the park in 1900.
However, the project was deemed unprofitable and abandoned by 1914, with only two of the planned sixty houses built. Instead, Güell allowed Gaudí to convert the unfinished project into a park. Gaudí moved into one of the completed houses and lived there until his death in 1926.
Over time, Park Güell became a popular attraction for its unique blend of natural landscapes and architectural elements. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, cementing its status as a must-visit destination in Barcelona.
Today, the park is owned by the city and serves as a testament to Gaudí's genius, featuring his signature use of organic shapes, vibrant colors, and intricate mosaics.
